Before you print

Scan it first. Test with an iPhone and an Android phone, from the distance people will actually stand.
Size it right. Print at least 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide for handouts. For signs, make it about one tenth of the scanning distance.
Keep the border. Leave the white space around the code. Text or graphics touching it can stop it scanning.
Tag each placement. Use different tracking tags for each flyer, sign or event so you know which one brings in appointments.
